One thing they do at our medical school is this thing called "Faces of Patients" where

they begin the very first day of med school with an activity where patients 

from the community with various conditions walk up to the front of the room 

and say a few things about themselves before they dramatically reveal that

"I am the face of ____insert condition here____ ."

The whole thing is supposed to make us all suddenly realize that 

patients are people and not just conditions (no way!). 

You know, because it's definitely not like they check for something like that 

before admitting people to med school, so it's important to teach that 

lesson on day one, which this activity may or may not do -- I don't know 

how they quantify those sorts of things. 

The reason this is relevant to the Match Day Music Blog is this: a key feature 

of Faces of Patients is that throughout this entire session where people 

walk up to the microphone one by one and describe themselves, 

John Mayer's Say is playing in the background. 

The. Entire. Time. 

This equates to, as I remember it, a solid 20 minutes or so of Say on loop.

That is what I remember about the first day of medical school. 

Specifically because of this, using Say would bring a sort of ironic continuity

to the whole thing. And how funny it would be to head up to the microphone 

to read the paper in your envelope and first announce that 

"I am the face of matching/

sleep deprivation/

a future resident/

about to be graduated/

being officially done subsidizing all the alcohol that my classmates consume."

would definitely be a nod to A, one of my favorite college roommmates.

There are definitely components of the whole third and fourth

year of med school thing that I am less than looking forward

to. This might be a nice nod to the straight up perseverance 

that'll be necessary to get through them. 

Robin Sparkles - Let's Go to the Mall

Regardless of whether you loved or hated the HIMYM finale, 

this song and this video and this backstory remain as evidence of 

one of the best Canadian pop music videos ever to have been 

created by an American sit com. 

Fiddler on the Roof - Matchmaker

A rather thematically appropriate suggestion from DSP.

the first ten seconds of this one could a be pretty fun Match day song.

In contrast to yesterday's idea, this could be useable if somehow I 

knew that I wasn't going to be staying at the same institution for residency.

This one would be for all those people who have gotten my name wrong and/or sent emails intended for me to entirely different people during my time as a medical and graduate student. For the record, it's not even like I have an unusual name.

My friend R already called dibs on this one, but it's worth including here to acknowledge the sheer worthiness of this song as a Match Day song.

What better Match Day song to capture the whole medical school + impending residency experience than one that combines Disney with occasional patronizing insults and veiled references to warfare?

It is very possible that many of the med students I will be matching with will be just a touch too young to have had the Spice Girls as any sort of integral part of their adolescence, which would make a song like this all the better.

Or perhaps on Match Day I should acknowledge my California roots.

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

The rationale behind why this might be a nice song to walk to more or less at the close of the whole MD-PhD experience should be, I think, pretty obvious.

New Purpose.

The class of med students that I started medical school with about three and a half years ago just celebrated their Match Day last week. I'm happy that my med school friends seem to have generally matched into specialties and locations that they're rather pleased with. Then again, I was never super super close with the vast majority of my med school classmates, so instead of bringing on bouts of depression and self-pity as others have told me this milestone can induce in the MD-PhD kids that get "left behind" in med school/grad school/life, the recent Match Day celebrations have made me realize something a bit more tangential: I have approximately four years to find The Best Match Day Song Ever*. And what better place to keep track of my ideas than in the revival of this old blog? Exactly.

*So different schools do Match Day differently, but at ours when it's your Match Day you have the option of picking a song that gets played for all of 10 seconds when your name is called as you walk from your seat to the front of the room to find out where you've matched. It's like the music they play during award shows on TV to avoid the awkward silence that might otherwise ensue as winners make their way to the stage.
